Rehoboth Chapel on Dawson Hill

This postcard view, taken in the 1900s by local photographer Richard Simpson, shows the entrance way to the Rehoboth Chapel on Dawson Hill. The Chapel was built in 1835 and H.H, Asquith, who later became Prime Minister, attended it as a boy. Some of his relatives were buried in the churchyard. The terraced houses to the right in Brunswick Street were known as Joe Hirst's Row. In 1849, a severe cholera epidemic started in Morley near to this site, probably due to infected drinking water from a well.
