David K Atkinson was born in Morley in 1936 and attended Victoria Road Infants School, Peel Street Junior Boys’ School and Morley Grammar School before graduating from Leeds University with a BA Honours degree in Geography.

He then taught geography and history at Woodkirk Secondary school and was a founder member of Morley Local History Society in 1965. As an author, he was responsible for a pictorial history of Morley Borough and numerous articles, published both in the local press and in booklet form. However, his chief interest in local history was in building up the collection from which many of the pictures on this website have been selected.

On his death in 2004, the collection of around 8000 items was bequeathed to Leeds City Libraries to be kept in Morley and made available for the use of Morley people.

Morley Community Archives was set up to preserve such records for future generations, and this website is one of the means by which David Atkinson’s important historical collection is being made available in fulfilment of his wishes.
