What’s new – July 2016

Photos from David Gaunt’s collection were added to the Galleries.

We have spent much time and effort showing how the town and its inhabitants were affected by the start of the Battle of the Somme.

Somme Book_CoverA booklet – ‘Morley and the First Day of the Somme’ – was published which contains extensive details of the men from this area who were casualties as a result of action on 1-July-1916. This contains a map of the area where they fought, photos of a number of the casualties and a table of men on the Morley Memorial who were killed during the course of the whole battle. Newspaper clippings also show how the local people received news about their loved ones.

We helped present the town’s tribute to those men who were casualties on the first day of the battle and details of this can be seen at :
