The fire started in the Albert Mills in Wellington Street when some rags caught fire. It then spread to the Town Hall dome and the fire brigade were unable to prevent the destruction of this. Fortunately, little damage was done to the rest of the building.
The town was relatively deserted since it took place during the Morley Public Holidays. The fair haired young man in the foreground is David Trowsdale, the second son of Stanley and Marjorie Trowsdale who were Mayor and Mayoress in 1966-67.
